The U. S. Food and Drug Administration has issued a warning letter to the drugmaker of a sudden rise in counterfeit drugs.
The FDA sent the letter on Thursday, after receiving a warning letter from the organization from a patient advocate.
Michael J. Weil, a 49-year-old patient from New York, told reporters he bought the drug he used to buy Viagra from a local pharmacy, and then bought it himself.
When he got the drug, he was taking the drug daily for five days.
The drugmaker, Pfizer, has been taking steps to prevent such an increase in counterfeit drugs, the letter said. It says the increase in counterfeit drugs can be deadly.
“We urge consumers to purchase the drugs with a prescription and to report any adverse events to the FDA immediately,” Weil said in the letter.
“This is not a new concern for patients. The FDA has already issued a warning letter to the manufacturer of a drug that has been prescribed by the doctor, and that has caused the most serious and potentially life-threatening adverse events. We urge the manufacturer to revise the prescription to contain the added risk of severe and fatal adverse events,” the FDA said.
“If a patient experiences an adverse event while taking the drug, call the FDA immediately.”
The FDA said it was not making the changes because it was concerned that consumers would be unaware of the increased risk.
In a statement, the company said it had not acted on the concerns. However, it added that it was not aware of any other reports of such events.
A statement issued by Pfizer said that Pfizer’s safety team reviewed 22,000 customer reviews on 22 occasions between February 2019 and February 2020, but the FDA has not identified specific events that had the potential to lead to such an increased risk.
The company said it did not plan to take action against the drugmaker because it was concerned about the drug’s safety and efficacy.
The company did not respond to a request for comment.
In a letter to the FDA, Weil said he bought Viagra from a local pharmacy and bought the drug himself, and that he took the drug for five days.
He said he never took the drug and that he did not have any personal contact with the patient.
The FDA said it was not aware of the increased risk for the drugmaker’s safety.
“Our safety team is working diligently to determine the best course of action for all concerned,” the agency said.
The letter is expected to be sent Friday, or by a patient advocate, according to the company’s website. It said the letter “is a warning to the public that the risk of adverse events associated with the use of this drug may be greater than the benefits.”
The letter was sent in response to a public comment thread on Twitter from a patient advocate who was trying to help with his case.
“I would like to write to the FDA immediately, and tell them that my experience with this drug and the risks and adverse events of this drug have not been discussed with my colleagues, patients or other health care providers,” she wrote.
“This drug has been on my tongue in the throat for a while, and I’m not sure what is in it. I have been taking this drug for three years and the risk of side effects has been very high.”
Last week, the FDA said it was aware of a case in which the company was selling counterfeit drugs that contained an ingredient in the drug that the FDA called “suspicion.”
The FDA said it was not aware of the case, but the company said it has not made any changes to its labeling.
The FDA said it has not received any reports of such cases.

ViagraConnect manufacturer, Pfizer, estimates more than a fifth of men aged over 18 in Britain suffer from erectile dysfunction, but almost half of those over 40 have not sought medical help.
The erectile dysfunction drug will be available in 14,000 stores across Britain and via pharmacy websites.
The tablets will be available exclusively from Boots until 10 April.
Those aged 18 and over will be able to buy the tablets following a conversation with a pharmacist or after filling out an online form. Men can ask to speak to a pharmacist in a private consultation room if preferred.
The pharmacists will determine whether treatment is appropriate for the patient and give advice on erectile dysfunction, usage of the medicine and potential side effects. They will advise men to consult with their doctor no less than six months after buying Viagra so that any potential underlying conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or heart disease can be investigated.
A Boots spokesperson said that the man affected by erectile dysfunction should buy the drug themselves wherever practically possible.
Men with severe heart problems, those at high risk of heart problems, liver failure, kidney failure, strokes or those taking certain other medicines, will still need to be prescribed the drug under the supervision of a doctor.
A four-pack of the tablets will cost £19.99 and an eight-pack £34.99.
Men who buy it will be advised that they can take a 50 mg tablet an hour before having sex, but should not use more than one pill a day.
Viagra is is already available as an NHS prescription free of charge for those eligible not to pay for their prescriptions.
The pharmacist will decide how many packs will be supplied in a transaction.
The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) announced in November it was to steer men away from buying the tablets from. In 2016 £17m worth of unlicensed and counterfeit Viagra was seized.
Kristie Sourial, Pfizer’s medical manager, said: “It’s important to remember that erectile dysfunction is a medical condition, and that the impact often goes beyond the physical symptoms – it can lead to men feeling anxious, depressed and lacking in confidence.
“Our hope is that the availability of Viagra Connect in pharmacies will encourage men who do nothing about their erectile dysfunction to seek help, and encourage those who are inclined to seek help to do so sooner.”
